June 5, 2006: 80 lengths
Published June 5th, 2006One of the reasons I stopped swimming was the closure of IMPE gym (and the largest pool on campus) for renovation. That left Freer as the only other viable option, a nice enough pool but too small for a school this size. Because it only has seven 25-yard lanes, there’s a lot of potential for aggravation if you have to share lanes with discourteous swimmers.
Tonight for instance, I had to swim with a woman who had absolutely no idea how slow she was swimming compared to the rest of us in the lane. Not only that, but she wouldn’t pause and let anyone pass on the turn. I still did a fragmented 80 lengths (1.136 miles / 1,828.8 meters) but I wouldn’t call it a particularly focused swim. I may have to investigate other options around town.
As an aside, it appears I have entered my curmudgeonly years.
Wonder what makes 80 lengths translate into curmudgeonly. Better explain it to us older folks!

It’s the crabbing about having to share my lane with other swimmers that makes me suspect I’m becoming a curmudgeon. Really, I’m about this far from shaking my fist and grumbling to myself about “those gol durn kids.”
And you’re usually such a sweet guy! Perhaps I will have to revise my opinion. Sweet guy unless has to share! LOL
No no no, I know you. I like you, so sharing is ok. It’s just inconsiderate strangers I have a problem with. Perhapes it’s my inner German need for order starting to express itself…
Oh man, I really did want to swim with you tonight - but by the time I got home from work and helping with a couch fiasco, it was 6, and I just wanted to eff around with Flickr. Which I did. One day this week, though!
Welocme to the “curmudgeonly years” Kurt! Personally, I’m trying to leave them already, but it IS hard some times. So very hard.
