Words of wisdom

From the fortune cookie that came with dinner this evening:
A real patriot is the fellow who gets a parking ticket and rejoices that the system works.
My dad will greatly appreciate this.

June 10, 2006: 80 lengths

Another 80 lengths, and this time I had the lane to myself. Apparently, people have better things to do with their Saturday nights. Who knew? That makes 4.5 miles (7.3 kilometers) since last Saturday, not bad for the first week back.

June 7, 2006: 80 lengths

Aside from an accidental punch in the neck from the guy in the next lane, this evening’s session was happily uneventful. I still had to share the lane with a couple of other swimmers, but unlike last time, we were pretty well matched in terms of speed. Did 80 lengths again (1.136 miles / 1,828.8 meters) and almost tacked on another 10, but thought better of it. I’ll get there soon enough.

June 5, 2006: 80 lengths

One of the reasons I stopped swimming was the closure of IMPE gym (and the largest pool on campus) for renovation. That left Freer as the only other viable option, a nice enough pool but too small for a school this size. Because it only has seven 25-yard lanes, there’s a lot of potential for aggravation if you have to share lanes with discourteous swimmers.

Tonight for instance, I had to swim with a woman who had absolutely no idea how slow she was swimming compared to the rest of us in the lane. Not only that, but she wouldn’t pause and let anyone pass on the turn. I still did a fragmented 80 lengths (1.136 miles / 1,828.8 meters) but I wouldn’t call it a particularly focused swim. I may have to investigate other options around town.

As an aside, it appears I have entered my curmudgeonly years.

June 3, 2006: 80 lengths

I hit the pool for the first time in 5 months or so, and thus the Swimlog makes its return. I was actually able to knock out 80 uninterrupted lengths of the pool (1.136 miles / 1,828.8 meters) before I wore down, and I’m sure to feel it tomorrow. I’d forgotten how much I enjoy it though, so I’m hoping to get back in the routine.

Metadata transformation

I noticed this afternoon while I was scanning through my library feeds that MODS 3.2 had just gone final. I immediately fired up my XML editor to take a look, which leads me to believe that after a little under a year and a half in school, my transformation into some sort of librarian is […]
