Windsor McCay, Daydreams and Nightmares.
Flipping through the book before I cataloged it, I noticed the similarities between McCay’s illustrations of flying machines and Miyazaki’s, particularly in Porco Rosso and Castle in the Sky. A quick search revealed that not only had that observation been noted before, but that Miyazaki had actually received the Windsor McCay Award for Contributions to the Art of Animation back in 1998. I also discovered that McCay was the creator of Little Nemo in Slumberland and Gertie the Dinosaur.
I love cataloging. Love it, love it, love it.
