Playing catch-up

I’ve spent the last week or so in Suzhou without access to an internet connection, and I haven’t missed it in the least. Because of this, however, I’ve been slow to post even the briefest of updates on my current trip to China. I’m also having a hard time posting photos to Flickr because of appallingly slow upload speeds when I do connect, so they’ll have to wait until I return to the States.

Now that the meta-crabbing is over, I have to say that coming back for a visit has turned out to be one of the very best decisions I could have made. Not only have I had a great time in Beijing revisiting familiar sites and exploring new ones, but I’ve had the pleasure of spending a week in Suzhou, a city I knew very little about before discovering that one of my students from 1990-1991 (and now a dear friend) lives here. It’s a historic city of canals and rivers and classic Chinese gardens, and it’s entirely unlike Beijing or nearby Shanghai (which is fantastic in its own way). This weekend I’ll be in Shanghai, and then it’s back to Beijing before I head back to the U.S. on the 11th. I still have a lot of folks to see before I go, but then this trip has been all about reconnecting with friends, and what a treat at that.

    Hi Kurt!
Glad China is such a good time. Really enjoy seeing HP mania from their perspective! Has the book been translated already? Or is it just a British copy that has been sent to the P.R.C.? I can tell by the dustjackets…. I’m sure you picked up a copy….
Thanks again for all the help on my website. See you in 501!
