Tie those loose ends up

Mao ephemera at Panjiayuan

A couple of loose ends I want to get out of the way this morning. First of all, I made a trip to Panjiayuan flea market a couple of weeks ago and discovered an entire area that I’d never seen before. Up until this visit, I’d only really explored the covered stalls in the main section of the market. This time, I waded in a little deeper towards the far end and discovered an entire outdoor area where instead of stalls vendors just spread out their stuff on the ground. Lots of pottery, and a wider range of miscellaneous objects than you’ll see in the main area, which tends to be dominated by newer “antiques” and jade jewelry. And as always, I was able to find a good amount of Mao ephemera. New photos posted to the Panjiayuan Market photo gallery.

In other news, I made the mistake of leaving my wallet in the back seat of a cab, so I’ve been without cash for a week now, and won’t have access until Wednesday when I get my new card from the Chinese bank I use here. I’ve still been able to get out and about, but it’s been via the subway more than anything else — better to spend three yuan per trip than the 15-25 that cab rides across town usually cost. One positive: this enforced period of savings means I’ll have more money to use on travels this summer before I head home. And the subway’s a great place to take photos, that’s ok too.

Lastly, I think I’ve found the best burger in Beijing. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Riverside Cafe, just a short walk from the expat church I attend.
