News about sandwiches that you will like

Last summer, Thomas Crone and I were contacted by Rick Sebak, a video producer at WQED Public Television in Pittsburgh to shoot a segment on various sandwich specialties around St. Louis, in particular the St. Paul and various odd sandwiches sold at C&K Barbecue in North City (read more about the experience over at thecommonspace.org). The show ran nationally Wednesday night (though, irony of ironies, not here in St. Louis), and the feedback is starting to roll in. Got a call from family in St. Augustine who spotted me in the show, and there’s a thread started over at eGullet. It’ll be running again this weekend (and probably several times since it’s public television), so check your local listings.

    Kurt,
    Haven’t seen the “Sandwiches that you will like” show, but you remind me of one of Megan’s favorite songs here, “Sandwiches.”
    Sandwiches are beautiful, sandwiches are fine -
    I like sandwiches, I eat them all the time.
    I eat them for my supper and I eat them for my lunch;
    If I had a hundred sandwiches, I’d eat them all at once!

    Sing that chorus again with me - ready?

    Sandwiches are beautiful, sandwiches are fine -
    I like sandwiches, I eat them all the time.
    I eat them for my supper and I eat them for my lunch;
    If I had a hundred sandwiches, I’d eat them all at once!

    Mm-hmm!

    Well I’m roamin’ and a-travelling and a-wanderin’ alone,
    And if you care to listen I will sing a happy song;
    I will not ask a favour and I will not ask a fee
    but if you have yourself a sandwich won’t you give a bite to me?

    Well once I went to England - I visited the Queen!
    I swear she was the grandest lady that I’d ever seen…
    I told her she was beaootiful and could not ask for more;
    She handed me a sandwich and she threw me out the door!

    Yeah!

    Well, once I met a pretty girl - the fairest in the land -
    Young men in the county, they were asking for her hand.
    They would offer her the moon and they would offer her the sea;
    I offered her a sandwich and she said she’d marry me.

    Well a sandwich may be egg or cheese or even peanut butter,
    But they all taste so good to me it really doesn’t matter.
    Jam or ham or cucumber or any kind will do -
    I like sandwiches - how about YOU?!

    - traditional camp song, as performed by Fred Penner on the album The Cat Came Back.

    Next time we see each other Megan and I will have to sing it for you!
    Happy sandwiches dear!
